Process Paper
My topic, Why we Have the Constitution, involves why the Articles of Confederation failed and were replaced by the Constitution that still governs the United States today. I was led in the direction of this topic by Mr. Erway offering ten bonus points to any topic involving the formation of the constitution. I did not know many specifics about the Articles of confederation other than it was the governing document during the first years of our nation’s development. After some preliminary research I had a deep interest in the politics that formed the laws of this country, so i decided to base my project on it.
Research on the Articles of confederation and the constitution began by consulting books to gain a general knowledge of the topic and know what type of information I was looking for. The next place I searched was online databases and found a wide variety of primary sources. these included political figures’ correspondence among one another debating the role of the national government. I found my secondary sources online as well, articles written online provided insight into the topic. I also found online media of images and videos that would help me display information about my topic online.
I choose to present my project in the form of a website. I believe that this form allows for information to be presented orderly and in a variety of ways. I am also not very artistic, so a display board was not an option. I also have done multiple past NHD projects on websites and i believe this experience would help me in this situation.
The NHD theme exploration, encounter and exchange in history is found throughout the formation of the Constitution. The founding fathers were exploring a form of government that had not been used since the ancient Romans. They also needed to improve upon it because their system had failed. The constitution also aided in interstate trade and commerce, this could be said to be an exchange between states. The founding fathers also debated the benefits and disadvantages of exchanging power from the states to a strong federal Government.
